The Rebel and The Rake by Emily Sullivan is in the center of the picture. Underneath the book to the bottom left is an open book. To the right of the open book in the lower corner is a tea cup filled with coffee. Above the teacup to the right of the book is a string of turtles plant. To the upper left of the book is a forest green, fuzzy blanket.

Ugh I really wanted to like this book. I mean I Ugh I really wanted to like this book.

I mean I pretook this photo because the cover is gorgeous and the premise!!! (Hence this review bc I’m not letting this photo go to waste)

The premise of this book is amazing. A plus size black woman having to be the model for lingerie and also is the creative director of it and falling in love with her rival!?!?

But honestly I DNF’d about 80% through because I couldn’t do the last roughly 60ish pages.

Where did it go wrong? Well first of all when is a 36D plus size? Boo, you can get lingerie easily… (which btw why is this lingerie described as Torrid (🤢) to the extreme???)

But beyond that the timeline is constantly jumping so pacing feels way off. Reid (mmc/li/rival) does some questionable agreements with the lingerie brand that are hard to get over AND IT KEEPS GETTING WORSE. Like I would never forgive him if I were Cassie (fmc).

I can read through bland relationships in romance but SOMETHING has to make up for it. The friendships didn’t seem genuine at all and felt inconsistent.

I WILL say that I am going to give Jackson another try if another of her books is published because I did like her writing. I thought it flowed easily and I really liked her voice. Just the plot and the characters not so much.

And yes I’m counting this is my reading count for the year because that ~80% was EARNED💁🏻‍♀️.

Also this is my PSA to let you know DNFing is good for you. There are too many better books for you to read. (Unless you’re enjoying your hate read—which then go forth!)

Typically I try not to be too negative and I’m a pretty easily pleased by books but I couldn’t.

💕ARC Book Review💕 5⭐️ | Historical Roma 💕ARC Book Review💕

Ummm, hello my favorite book😍. I’ve seriously been here with all my emotions with this book since March (thank you @readforeverpub !!!) and it is time.

Do you like second chance romance? Persuasion vibes? Starchy ex naval officers turned body guard with a sexy cane? A society woman determined to run her factory ethically? Monte Cristo? BATHTUB AND CARRIAGE scenes —and a bed scene that is 🤌!!!

The way this book has my soul. Georgiana and Henry met 8 years ago during the season, then due to ~circumstances~ they didn’t end up together. Georgiana got married to an awful man and Henry went into Naval Intelligence. Now the gangs back together because Georgiana’s being threatened.

Seriously though, the character development, the steam, the plot, literally everything about this book I love. The flashbacks to the past are perfectly placed too. I cannot wait to hold a physical copy in my hands. I’ve reread it countless times now.

So thank you Emily Sullivan for crafting this MASTERPIECE.

This is the third book in the series, I highly recommend at least reading the second one before this one as there’s character overlap, but if not I still think you could get the plot and characters, just not all the details.

PS expect me only to become more insufferable about this series because y’all need to read it.

Shout out to this book keeping me company in ride lines💕. I read this entire book in Disney it was that good!!

It’s the second in the Out Of the Park series by Jaqueline Snowe, and I do recommend reading them in order. It’ll help.

I ADORED this novel. It’s a second chance romance that has all of the feels. Michelle and Brooks used to be a thing 2 years ago but she suddenly called it off. Now he’s back playing for the professional baseball team and wants her back. Yeah, it’s that kind of book👀🔥.

She’s the grumpy one and he’s little mr romantic. And their dynamic is so perfect. The chemistry is phenomenal from page one and ugh it pulls on your heart strings. Plus it leads to the steamier scenes which are 10/10!!!

There is a lot of heavier themes like Alzheimer’s, drug abuse (off page), child abuse (off page), neglect (off page), and emotional abuse (mostly off page, some questionable at the end).

All in all I highly recommend this book and also recommend bringing your kindle to amusement parks😂.

If there was one “series” that I could chose t If there was one “series” that I could chose to make into a tv series it’d be this one.

You can’t tell me that an epic western romance filled with an ALREADY diverse cast wouldn’t be absolutely amazing. I mean there’s cowboys, saloons, shootings, actual historic events, highly independent women, mail order brides, “Duchess” as a nickname, passing as white, and so much love.

As much as I appreciate another Austen retelling or making white HR diverse, BEVERLY JENKINS IS SITTING RIGHT HERE!!

And her writing fits a movie. It’s not super purple and tbh it kinda shocked me but it’d be perfect for the screen. So much action.

If you haven’t read these I highly recommend them. They’re perfect audiobooks and just the covers are😍.

What series do you wish were on the screen?

(Ok ok, I know it’s technically not one series but Rebel is definitely the outlier and these all have the same characters)

Thank you @avonbooks and @netgalley for an arc of this book. All opinions are my own.

Oh how I love this series by Lorraine Heath.

The layers of complexity within the characters and how the unfold is by far one of the best I’ve read (at least recently). Between the incredibly plot that kept me intrigued, to the inter turmoil of the characters, to the steam there this is truly a gem of a book!

I loved Esme so much, she was a fascinating character that I really connected with and enjoyed reading. Her back story (no spoilers here) made her by far the most interesting character in this whole series. And she’s older!!! (Love that in a HR)

I have been waiting for Marcus’s book since the first in the series because you knew it was going to be a ride! And it was. Marcus really overcame a lot and I loved all of the softer moments he had with Esme. Like the spicier scenes still had me swooning with him because he was there for her the ENTIRE time😏😏.

Ok that plot though. I am a sucker for spy and political intrigue AND romance. So obviously this book was perfect for me. A balanced blend of discovering the motive and the actors and avoiding the ~feels~ for each other.

Truthfully I already want to reread this book. Just great!

I think if you liked Heath’s earlier books or Emily Sullivan’s novels (I’ve heard Meredith Duran is similar and need to read her books) then I think you’d like it!!

What other historical romances have the spies and political intrigue? I need more💕💕.

Sooo not quite a mid year round up since we’re f Sooo not quite a mid year round up since we’re fairly past that but it’s like a 7/12ths round up😅.

I’ve read so many excellent romances this year and here are my top 5 that are currently out💕.

⚾️Fire Season by KD Casey seriously might be in my top 10 of all time. It’s so tender and sweet. Plus who doesn’t love erotic depictions of curveballs💕

💖The Lady Tempts an Heir by Harper St George is an all around excellent historical romance that touches on heavier topics while keeping all the romance

👩‍🏫The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe is one of my favorite tropes (rake teaches wallflower how to seduce) and it’s by Shupe who is one of my all time favorite authors. It’s amazing. Kit is a book bf.

🍑Bet On It by Jodie Slaughter is the southern bingo sex pact book of my dreams. There’s so much depth to the characters, the steam, Aja being the badass she is in her own way. Try to read this book and not be hungry at the end.

🌆Lease On Love by Falon Ballard is a soft, slow burn romance that warms you all the way through. All of the characters and their journeys are phenomenal. I just can’t even find the proper words because I love it so much.

Also shout outs to The Return of the Duke by Lorraine Heath, A Perfect Equation by Elizabeth Everette, and Wild Rain by Beverly Jenkins for some more amazing reads!!

What book do I need to read from your tops of this year thus far??
